Congratulations! You got your bees through their first winter! Now the fun really begins.
This is not a beginner's class. It is most appropriate for beekeepers with colonies that are 9+ months old.
Successful beekeeping is an artful balance of skill, anticipation, preparation and luck. This intermediate class will explore the best methods to achieve this for Spring. Most of the beekeeping year is spent supporting colonies for optimal health and Winter survival. In Spring, management techniques aim for this, but also must incorporate Spring build-up, swarm management and the possibility of honey production.
This class will cover the ins & outs of late winter management, and help you create a plan for Spring and Summer. Come learn how to prevent the most common issues and guide your colonies toward success.
Topics to be covered:
2nd season goals: More bees or honey?
Colony health evaluation and Spring cleaning.
Nutrition requirements, starvation prevention & feeding options.
Right sizing for warmth, ventilation & avoiding condensation.
Equipment requirements for Spring build-up.
Beginning swarm management.
